Old Town Guide 119 in the BWCA, Alder Lake.

What can I say, I had a really good time on my May Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness trip.  The weather was all over the place with cold, wind, sun, clouds, sleet, and rain.  As such the fishing was not so great but my buddy and I managed to fend for ourselves and catch some to eat.

I took some pictures and even managed to video record like my family wanted me to do.  On top of that I made a little video and posted it to YouTubeThe video is shared further below.

May Boundary Waters Canoe Area Trip

May Boundary Waters Canoe Area Trip

Alder Lake BWCA

It’s no secret if you follow this blog that I have a Boundary Waters Canoe Area trip coming up in in less than two weeks.  I am really starting to get excited for the trip.  It will be epic!  Ice is about 90 percent gone from the lakes I plan on paddling, and should be completely gone in a few more days.

Lake trout fishing should be good.  The bugs should be near nil, or very minimal.  Day time temps are seasonally expected to be in the mid to upper 60s during the day.  In the evening down into the 40s.  Last year during this same time temps were in the mid to upper 70s for highs.

Eagerly Waiting Canoe Season 2019

Eagerly Waiting Canoe Season 2019

February 2019 certainly has been snowy.  Winter started out rather mild with rain in December and January, which is not unheard of but certainly not the norm for northwest Wisconsin.  Then February came along with snow storm after snow storm.  I heard someplace it has been the third most snowy February on record.

Shipping A Canoe To Your House – Worked Well For Me

Shipping A Canoe To Your House – Worked Well For Me

Shipping a canoe to your house? Easier than you think.
Shipping a canoe to your house? Easier than you think.

I had my new canoe shipped directly to my house.  When I mention that to some people they seem surprised .  More than a few ask me how it arrived and if I had any issues regarding delivery.  The simple and short answer is no.  The long and drawn out answer is also no.  Thinking of having a canoe shipped to your house?  Don’t worry too much.

Here is how it went down for me.  Shipping the canoe to my house was the easy part!  If you are contemplating ordering an Old Town Guide 119 from Dick’s Sporting goods in particular, then this article is for you!

Old Town Guide 119 In The BWCA?

Old Town Guide 119 In The BWCA?

My Jeep with my Old Town Guide 119
My Jeep with my Old Town Guide 119

Wow, some people think I’m nuts for buying the Old Town Guide 119 and using it on a Boundary Waters Canoe Trip.  I don’t see what the big deal is?  Not sure if it’s just that they don’t like Old Town canoes, or maybe they think an eleven foot nine inch long canoe is just way to small.  I dunno…

In this post I am going to compare my Old Town Guide 119 to a much more expensive Swift Adirondack Pack 12.  You may be surprised, than again maybe not.

I Went To The BWCA And It Rained The Entire Time!

I Went To The BWCA And It Rained The Entire Time!

The typical view from my base-camp in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Rain and more rain.
The typical view from my base-camp in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Rain and more rain.

Okay, maybe it didn’t rain the entire time… but it did rain 98.99% of the time.  And not just rain, heavy rain.  And there was some wind too, major gusts.  Thunder once in while as well, and of course flashes of lightning.  It was chilly with day time temps in the mid 50s and night time lows in the low to mid 40s.

I didn’t mind the cool temps.  But man, I sure wish I would have had at least one day with some sunshine, even if just party sunny skies.

I Purchased A New Canoe – Old Town Guide 119

The Old Town Guide 119
The Old Town Guide 119

A few weeks ago I had the chance to test paddle an Old Town Guide 119 on Bone Lake in Polk County Wisconsin.  To be completely honest I was not expecting to enjoy paddling the Guide 119.  So you can imagine my surprise when I found myself having a good time.

A very good time.

It was not too windy out that day but there was some wave action on the water.  It was actually a good day to test out such a small solo canoe as the Old Town Guide 119.

What Canoe Should I Buy? Hard Decision!

What Canoe Should I Buy? Hard Decision!

Old Town Discovery 119. Could this be my next canoe?
Old Town Discovery 119. Could this be my next canoe?

It’s no secret I’ve been thinking about buying a new canoe for almost a year.  Been saving up a little money on the side to make that new canoe purchase, and I’m getting close to being ready… sorta.  Currently I own an aluminum 17 footer that is over twenty years old and over 86 pounds – I call it my “battle-canoe”, it’s a real beast and takes a beating.

Ever since my folks sold their second home, which was on a secluded Northern Wisconsin lake, I’ve hardly used that old aluminum canoe.  I don’t think I’ve had it in the water in over five years.  It just sits in storage.
